Absinthe the Green Fairy or La Fee Verte

Absinthe or La Fee Verte is also one of the most celebrated alcoholic beverage in history. It now occupies a place of pride as the most controversial and famous drink of all times, however, it was first developed as a stomach tonic.

Absinthe is an anise flavored spirit which is incredibly strong, between 45 and 75% Alcohol by volume. It is called “La Fee Verte” or “Green Fairy” due to its emerald green color. Herbs are used to make this distilled liquor. Fennel, green aniseed, and wormwood or Artemisia Absinthium are the main herbs. Henri-Louis Pernod, who first commercially distilled Absinthe, used other herbs such as hyssop, lemon balm, nutmeg, juniper, veronica, star anise and dittany to produce his famous original Pernod Absinthe recipe. The feeling was that herbs like wormwood, nutmeg, and calamus which only a few manufacturers used were psychoactive in nature. Water poured over the sugar on the Absinthe spoon causes the louche effect in the Absinthe due to the essential oils present in the herbs. Due to the insoluble nature of the oils present in Absinthe it clouds or louches.

The psychedelic effects of drinking the green fairy was attributed to thujone, a chemical present in wormwood. Cannibis has THC and Thujone was considered very similar to it. Thujone is present in very small quantity in Absinthe, alcohol and ethanol are the main ingredients. Thujone is not as dangerous as it is made out to be and recent research shows that the danger if any in Absinthe lies in its high alcohol content. Many studies and articles have been written on the subject. It is twice as strong as whisky and vodka and hence drink it in moderation, it is a drink to give pleasure and hence do it carefully.
