Learn How to Take Care of Your Rabbit

Rabbits may be small in stature, but they have a lot of special needs and requirements that differ from the normal type of pets that we are accustomed to. If it is in your mind to have a rabbit for a pet, the need to take the steps to learn how to take care of one first. To get you started, here are some things you should learn:

Rabbit Hutch

Ideally, your rabbit’s cage should be at least 4 times larger than your rabbit, but bigger is always better especially if it will spend most of its time inside the cage. The floor of the cage should always be solid. Many people are still apt to use a rabbit cages that have wire floors in them as they are much easier to keep clean than solid floor type cages, but this can often lead to problems in sores on your rabbits feet. If the cage you have has a wire floor, cover it with sisal mats, grass or a piece of wood.

Your Rabbits Diet

You need to make sure that you have a pretty much unlimited supply of grass hay for feed such as brome or timothy. Grass hay helps to ensure that your rabbit stays healthy by keeping its intestinal tract clean. As part of its feed, you will also need to keep a supply of rabbit pellets. Younger rabbits (under 6 months old) should eat pellets that contain at least 18% fiber and 15% to 19% protein. As a third part of your rabbits diet, you’re going to need to feed it plenty of dark leafy green vegetables such as collard greens, carrots tops, lettuce, and turnip greens. As a rule of thumb, you should give your rabbit 2 cups of greens for every 6 pounds that the rabbit weighs. Fresh, clean water should be available at all times.

Litter Training

Rabbits tend to litter in one portion of it’s cage. When your rabbit decides which area of its cage it wants to use, you need to fill that area with pelleted newspaper litter, or some type of hay. The box should be kept clean and changed daily so that the odors can be kept to a minimum.

Keeping the Cage Cleaned

Make sure that you clean your rabbits cage once a week. When you do this, you need to put your rabbit in another safe place in your house, or an alternate cage. Sweep the floor to remove any solid debris. Whenever you clean and scrub the cage floor, make sure that you use soap and warm water.

Handling Your Rabbit

Rabbit injury is caused by improper handling. Make sure that you don’t never pick up a rabbit by using its ears. When you pick up a rabbit, make sure that you use one hand to support its front legs and the other its back legs.

If you want to own a rabbit you need to have the following items: A cage or a hutch, litter for the litter box, a rabbit carrier or pet carrier, hay, a brush for grooming, rabbit pellets for food, chew toys that are safe, a box for digging, and any watering and food bowl which is preferably made out of ceramic.
