How to Apply Epoxy Floor Paints
The usual target for epoxy paints are basements and garages, since they take heavy traffic and need a paint that can endure it well. You can apply them on shop floors, concrete slabs, laundry room floors, brick pavers, interior floors, pole barns, kennels and trailers made out of wood. These floor finish is made such that it resists oil, dirt, water, grease, and many other contaminants that would make ordinary paint a mess. Tough resins that are mixed during the application are responsible for this. It’s because of this they are the most efficient solution for your floors.
Epoxy coating can be found in three different types. The first thing to know is that 100% solids don’t hace any solvents that will evaporate. Second, solvent based epoxies adhere and penetrate well but they are hazardous to health and need that you ventilate your garage or basement well during application to avoid breathing the fumes that emanate from them. The third option are water based paints that are more affordable, thinner, have that anti-slip texture and are not hazardous. But, a lot of ventilation is needed for these to dry up.
During application and drying of epoxy floor paints, clean the floor with a hard bristled brush and sweep away the debris, then scrub warm soapy water on the concrete floor and sweep it away also. You need to use a degreaser to remove all those soluble contaminants so your entire surface will be cleaned. You can check is your epoxy garage surface clean by spraying some water to see will it stick on the flooring. The garage floor should then be left overnight to dry. Apply your paint the following morning. You will need 2 or 3 layers to make a good coating. You should always have a old cotton rag near you when you are applying water based paint and a thinner for solvent based paints so you can get rid of all those nasty spills and drips.
Its toughness, its durability, its easy to clean finish, its salt and acid resistance is what endears me to this paint. Well, but these can only be attained from proper preparation, proper application and the time that you will give it to cure before you bring back your vehicle or allow traffic back.
