Giving Structure, as a Business Speaker, to Your Presentation.

You need to be able to communicate efficiently and produce quality talks to succeed as a business speaker.

It does not necessarily follow that an expert on business matters has the know-how to engage, educate and entertain an audience.

Full-time, business speaker John Bell describes some of the techniques he uses that have resulted in delegates voting him ‘Speaker of the Year’ on so many occasions.

In this article John gives an overview of how a professional business speaker goes about creating order by giving a speech some sense of structure.

Some of the world’s greatest business minds can ooze confidence and excel as practitioners of business, yet can become shivering wrecks whilst standing behind a lectern facing an unassuming and docile audience.

I begin by stating a fact ~ the best business speakers are not born with an ability to give informative, memorable, and entertaining speeches.

They have learnt the essential skills required for a polished, public speaking performance and then practise and perfect their art.

Here are my tips to a business speaker on structuring a business speech.

The first thing you need to establish is the title and purpose of your presentation. That could be ‘Giving a Business Speech’ as the title with the intention of giving an overview of the skills required to deliver an informative speech.

Clarify the purpose of your role as a business speaker by asking the client what they would prefer the audience knew or felt at the conclusion of your speech.

It is also important you are clear on how long your talk as an invited business speaker is required to run.

Prepare your business speech by clearing the decks (or your desk) ready for action.

As a professional business speaker I usually start by writing the title and aim of my talk onto two separate ‘Post-it’ note sheets and place them near the middle of my office desk.

Carry out a brainstorming session by writing anything that comes to mind that is connected to your title or business speaker objectives onto additional Post-its and place them around your title and defined objective.

Now, as a great business speaker in the making, you need to edit your work by removing any Post-its not essential to your talk theme.

Think about the time you have been given to talk as a quality speaker and whether it is usual at such events to invite questions from the audience on the business issues you have addressed.

Allow around three minutes of time for each Post-it and you will discover that your time management as a business speaker will be admired by all.

Establish order in your business speaker presentation by separating the Post-its and creating a beginning, middle and end in your speech. The beginning might be related to what existed prior to the production of the the amazing, new product, the middle a reference to the main advantages of the product, and the end perhaps some reference to the future benefits the delegates will achieve when they use the fantastic product.

You will also require a quick ‘overview’, normally placed near the front of your presentation, that tells the audience what you will be covering during your speech.

Conclude your masterpiece as a ‘business speaker of now proven quality’ by providing a memorable, short ending for the delegates.

Examine your speech as it sits on the desk in front of you. If a particular topic needs a detailed explanation you may, as a quality business speaker, have to drop other, less important material in your speech.

You have now completed the initial task of becoming a business speaker of worth by giving your speech structure.
