Our country needs its oil.  The world needs oil.  Most of the world economy runs on oil.  Some experts say that finding alternative fuels would end the need for oil.  But people use heating oil too.  And gas or not, an engine with moving parts requires oil as a lubricant.  ANWR oil drilling us important for another reason.  Petroleum is used to make many things we use every day.  Almost every appliance in a home has something made with oil.

People speak and write a lot about ANWR oil drilling.  Here’s one that was written in a personal blog.  The author says ANWR doesn’t have much oil.  Then he claims it will take a decade to get the first drops of oil from the area.

That’s a misrepresentation of ANWR oil drilling.  The drilling process will be quick if there’s little oil there.  Therefore there won’t be much impact on the surrounding wilderness.  That 10 year or more argument – we can’t get it now – has been made since the 70’s.  A journey of 1000 miles begins with but a single step.  We can’t produce oil if we never start drilling.

Other people express an anti ANWR oil drilling opinion:  We have to get off the use of oil and on to other energy sources.  Drilling for oil only prolongs our dependence on it.  An answer to that is eating the food in the refrigerator only prolongs our dependence on it.  Some day there will be little tablets that take care of nutrition.  If we stop eating now maybe someone will invent them more quickly.

Some people make weak arguments for ANWR oil drilling.  One wrote:  I need to drive my SUV because I like to see over the other cars.  All those high mileage cars are tiny.  I don’t feel big.  In reply:  Become a trucker.  Then you’re in a big rig, the largest vehicle on the road.  Think about how it will feel to make SUV drivers feel small.

An Alaskan guide said, in regard to ANWR oil drilling, that 80% of the oil currently drilled in Alaska goes to Japan.  Given that does it make sense to keep drilling?  That’s easy to answer.  Just because a farmer sells his food doesn’t mean he should stop growing it.
